In Romania, a toll vignette, known as a rovinieta, must be purchased for using the road network. It is available in 8 categories depending on the vehicle’s characteristics. Payment of the toll is mandatory for all vehicles, as regulated by Law No. 226/2023 on charges for the use of Romanian road infrastructure.

This is the most common category, as it includes vehicles with a maximum gross weight of 3.5 tons and up to 8+1 seats, such as:

Category B includes vans, light commercial vehicles, and pickup trucks with a maximum gross weight not exceeding 3.5 tons.

Romanian toll Category C includes vans and trucks with a gross weight exceeding 3.5 tons but not more than 7.5 tons.

Category D includes medium-duty trucks with a gross weight exceeding 7.5 tons but not more than 12 tons.

Category E includes semi-trailer trucks, heavy goods vehicles, and trucks with 2–3 axles and a gross weight of over 12 tons.

Heavy goods vehicles with 4 or more axles and a gross weight exceeding 12 tons must purchase a Romanian toll vignette in Category F.

Minibuses capable of transporting more than 9 but no more than 23 persons including the driver belong to Category G.

Category H applies to large buses capable of transporting more than 23 persons.

Romanian vignettes (Rovinieta) can be purchased with both short-term and long-term validity. However, it is important to note that the start date of validity can only be selected up to 30 days in advance from the current date. After choosing the appropriate category, selecting the validity period of the Romanian toll vignette is also an important step in the process. The available options are:

1- day toll vignette Romania

The daily toll vignette was introduced in Romania in 2025 and provides road usage authorization for the entire territory of Romania for the given day, with the exception of the separately charged Fetești Bridge. It can be purchased for all categories with both immediate and future start dates, therefore its exact validity period is also determined by the date of purchase.

• Same-day validity: if the start date of the vignette’s validity is set to the day of purchase, it will be valid from the time of purchase until 23:59 on the same day.

Example: if you purchase a daily vignette on August 8 at 16:00, it will be valid from the time of purchase until August 8 at 23:59 (midnight).

• Advance purchase: if the start date of the vignette’s validity differs from the purchase date, the vignette will be valid from 00:00 until 23:59 on the selected calendar day.

Example: if you purchase a daily vignette on June 16 but select June 18 as the start date of validity, the vignette will be valid from June 18 at 00:00 until June 18 at 23:59 (midnight).

When purchasing in advance, the first day of validity can be selected no more than 30 days later. This means that, for example, it is not possible to purchase a 7-day vignette in June with validity starting in August.

7-day toll vignette Romania

The 7-day Romanian toll vignette is only available for vehicle categories over 3.5 tons and can be purchased with same-day validity or as an advance purchase.

Example: if you purchase a 7-day Romanian toll vignette on July 10 at 12:23, it will expire on July 16 at 23:59.

• Advance purchase: if, on the day of purchase, a future date is selected as the start of validity, the vignette will be valid from 00:00 on the selected day (first day) and for the following 6 consecutive calendar days, until 23:59 on the last day.

Example: if you purchase a 7-day vignette on June 16 but select June 25 as the start date of validity, the vignette will be valid from June 25 at 00:00 until July 1 at 23:59.

When purchasing in advance, the first day of validity can be selected no more than 30 days later. This means that, for example, it is not possible to purchase a 7-day vignette in June with validity starting in August.

10-day toll vignette Romania

The 10-day Romanian toll vignette is only available for vehicle categories under 3.5 tons and can be purchased with same-day validity or as an advance purchase.

Example: if you purchase a 10-day vignette on June 16 but select June 25 as the start date of validity, the vignette will be valid from June 25 at 00:00 until July 4 at 23:59.

When purchasing in advance, the first day of validity can be selected no more than 30 days later. This means that, for example, it is not possible to purchase a 10-day vignette in June with validity starting in August.

30-day toll vignette Romania

The 30-day Romanian toll vignette can also be purchased for all categories and provides road usage authorization for Romania’s toll road network (with the exception of the Fetești Bridge). It can be purchased with both same-day and future validity dates.

Example: if you purchase a 30-day vignette on May 6 but select June 3 as the start date of validity, the toll vignette will be valid from June 3 at 00:00 until July 2 at 23:59.

When purchasing in advance, the first day of validity can be selected no more than 30 days later. This means that, for example, it is not possible to purchase a 30-day Romanian toll vignette in June with validity starting in August.

60-day toll vignette Romania

The 60-day Romanian toll vignette is only available in Categories A and B. It provides road usage authorization for Romania’s toll road network (with the exception of the Fetești Bridge) and can be purchased with both same-day and future validity dates.

Romania has an extensive toll road network, as road usage authorization is required not only for motorways but also for several other types of roads:

In Romania, the existence of a toll vignette is checked exclusively by the CNAIR – Compania Națională de Administrare a Infrastructurii Rutiere (National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration).

Inspections are carried out in two ways:

1. Through a permanently installed electronic camera system, and
2. Through temporarily deployed cameras.

The system checks by license plate number whether the vehicle has a valid rovinieta. If no valid match is found, a penalty notice is automatically issued.

In Romania, fines for driving without a toll vignette vary by category, but in all cases the amount to be paid is twice the cost of the 12-month vignette for the given category, while in the case of the maximum surcharge, up to four times the annual vignette fee may be charged:
